Mill-spun Icelandic lambswool yarn.
From Kat, Tag, Dot and Ruby.
This lopi yarn is spun in the Icelandic tradition and is a low twist single.
It has a beautifully soft handle when knitted, and I believe it is strong enough for weaving with as both warp and weft.
Icelandic sheep famously have two layers of fleece, the thel and the tog; one is short and warm and can be used on its own for warm garments worn next to the skin. The outer layer is strong and waterproof and traditionally would be used for hard wearing outer layer garments. They are spun together here in the lopi style, which has become popular in Iceland since they began using machines to spin their wool; the machines could not separate the layers easily. So we have the best of both worlds, strength, durability, softness and warmth.
Sent to Rampisham Hill Mill in Dorset for washing, carding and spinning.
I receive this yarn from the mill oiled on cones. It has the oil from the spinning machines on it, which easily washes out after you have finished your garment. If you are going to dye this yarn you will need to scour it gently first. If you would like a whole cone please contact me.
A truly small scale, rare breed, ethical, low mileage, sustainable yarn.
100% natural plastic-free yarn with a soft fawn brown shade. It accepts natural dyes easily.
