Discover the traditional craft of hand spinning in the beautiful surroundings of my wool workshop, just outside the Exmoor town of Wiveliscombe.

This beginner-friendly workshop will introduce you to the journey from fleece to yarn, using wool from our flock of rare breed sheep alongside a selection of other natural fibres. Whether you are completely new to spinning or have only tried it briefly, you'll learn the skills needed to create your own handspun yarn with confidence.

Using an Ashford Traditional spinning wheel, you'll learn how to prepare fibre, draft and spin yarn, ply your singles, and finish a skein ready to take home. Along the way, we'll explore the characteristics of different fibres, discuss sheep breeds and wool qualities, and look at the role of sustainability in modern fibre crafts.

During the workshop we will cover:

  • Choosing the right fleece for your project
  • Understanding wool characteristics and sheep breeds
  • Carding and combing fibre preparation techniques
  • Spinning on an Ashford Traditional spinning wheel
  • Different spinning styles and yarn structures
  • Plying and finishing your yarn
  • An opportunity to visit the HoneyWoods Flock and learn about their care

Workshops run from 10am to 4pm each day, with a break for lunch.

My workshops are designed to help you understand the entire process from fleece to finished yarn. By the end of the course, you will have created your own handspun yarn and gained the knowledge and confidence to continue spinning at home.

One-to-one tuition and small group workshops of up to four people are available. Private tuition can usually be arranged on a date that suits you. If you have two or three friends who would like to learn together, group bookings are welcome.

All tools, equipment, fibres, and refreshments are included.
